How Reporters Pulled Off the Panama Papers, the Biggest Leak in Whistleblower History
By : Andy Greenberg - 04.04.2016
When Daniel Ellsberg photocopied and leaked the Pentagon Papers to the New York Times in 1971, those 7,000 pages of top secret Vietnam War documents represented what was then the biggest whistleblower leak in history—a couple dozen megabytes if it were contained in a modern text file. Almost four decades later, WikiLeaks in 2010 published Cablegate, a world-shaking, 1.73 gigabyte collection of classified State Department communications that was almost a hundred times bigger.
If there’s some Moore’s Law of Leaks, however, it seems to be exponential. Just five years have passed since WikiLeaks’ Cablegate coup, and now the world is grappling with a whistleblower megaleak on a scale never seen before: 2.6 terabytes, well over a thousandfold larger.
On Sunday (April 3, 2016), more than a hundred media outlets around the world, coordinated by the Washington, DC-based International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, released stories on the Panama Papers, a gargantuan collection of leaked documents exposing a widespread system of global tax evasion. The leak includes more than 4.8 million emails, 3 million database files, and 2.1 million PDFs from the Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca that, according to analysis of the leaked documents, appears to specialize in creating shell companies that its clients have used to hide their assets.
“This is pretty much every document from this firm over a 40-year period,” ICIJ director Gerard Ryle told WIRED in a phone call, arguing that at “about 2,000 times larger than the WikiLeaks state department cables,” it’s indeed the biggest leak in history.

Mars & water on it
Liquid water exists on Mars, boosting hopes for life there, NASA says
By Michael Pearson, CNN

(CNN)Potentially life-giving water still flows across the ancient surface of Mars from time to time, NASA scientists said Monday in revealing a potential breakthrough in both the search for life beyond Earth and human hopes to one day travel there.
While the discovery doesn't by itself offer evidence of life on Mars, either past or present, it does boost hopes that the harsh landscape still offers some refuge for microbes to cling to existence.
"The existence of liquid water, even if it is super salty briny water, gives the possibility that if there's life on Mars, that we have a way to describe how it might survive," said John Grunsfeld, associate administrator for the Science Mission Directorate at NASA.

NASA says it found proof of water in dark streaks like these, called recurring slope lineae, on the walls of the Garni Crater on Mars.
NASA researchers using an imager aboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter confirmed the watery flows by looking at light waves returned from seasonal dark streaks on the surface, long suspected to be associated with liquid water.
The investigation showed the streaks absorb light at specific wavelengths associated with chemicals known to pull

Volkswagen story
Volkswagen: A brief history
By Tim BowlerBusiness reporter, BBC News
Germany's Volkswagen is the largest car maker in the world, after Toyota. Its 590,000 employees produce nearly 41,000 vehicles daily.
It currently owns 12 subsidiaries including Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Audi, Seat, Skoda, luxury brands such as Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche and Ducati - as well as Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Scania and Man.
It is a long way from its origins as part of Nazi leader Adolf Hitler's vision to enable German families to own their first car - and it also owes a great deal of thanks to the initiative of a British army major, Ivan Hirst, who saved it from being dismantled and sold off after World War Two.

It communicated the horrors of the Vietnam War in a way words could never describe, helping to end one of the most divisive wars in American history.
But beneath the photo lies a lesser-known story. It's the tale of a dying child brought together by chance with a young photographer.
Crying children, including 9-year-old Kim Phuc,

attack on suspected Viet Cong hiding places as South Vietnamese forces
from the 25th Division walk behind them.
A moment captured in the chaos of war that would serve as both her savior and her curse on a journey to understand life's plan for her.
'I really wanted to escape from that little girl,' says Kim Phuc, now 49. 'But it seems to

Surviving Hiroshima : Keiko Ogura
| Keiko Ogura |
That morning I was on the road near the house and all of a sudden I saw a flash of blueish white light - a magnesium-like flash and soon after a big sound with dust, and I was blown away and fell on the ground.
I found myself lying on the ground near the house. I thought the house was just in front of me but I couldn't see it because everything had become so dark and many pieces of wood and roof tiles and rubbish were falling on my head.
I was 2.4km from the hypocentre but houses nearer the hypocentre had caught fire and were burning.
I saw long lines of refugees, just quiet, I don't know why they were so quiet. There were long lines, like ghosts.
Most of them were stretching out their arms because the skin was peeling off from the tips of their fingers. I could clearly see the hanging skin, peeling skin, and the wet red flesh and their hair was burned and smelled, the burnt hair smelled a lot.
And many people, just slowly passed by the front of my house.
Parched
All of a sudden a hand squeezed my ankle. I was so scared but they said 'get me water'. Almost all the people were just asking 'water', and 'help me'.

5 Ways to boost your Pizza game
Alia Akkam, photo by Andrea Weir

Serious about crafting restaurant-caliber pizza on your
home turf? Then you’ve probably already shunned the packaged shredded
mozz for creamy balls of the fresh stuff. But that’s just the first step
to a killer pie. Ensuring your pizza emerges from the oven with the
vibrant sauce, airy but charred crust, and brilliantly creative toppings
of the latest pizzerias is a lot harder than it looks. Fortunately, we
tapped the pizza experts (aka pizzaioli) from some of the newest pizza
destinations across the country for their expert advice.
Strategy #1: Go Thick, Go Low
At Marta, Danny Meyer’s latest New York project, inside the Martha Washington Hotel, Nick Anderer mans the wood-burning ovens that elicit paper thin, Roman-style pizzas. This technique is even more challenging to master in the civilian kitchen devoid of 600-degree ovens, but the ambitious should certainly try. “If the raw dough is too dry, it burns before getting crispy. Higher hydration allows for more time on the pizza stone without burning, and this extra time results in crispier crust,” he explains. “But the bitch of it is that working with high-hydration dough at home is tricky, usually because of the transfer to the oven.”
Instead, Anderer points out, consider the pan pizza, or thicker, focaccia-like pizza rustica: “You can cook it for a longer time, at a lower temperature—closer to 450 or 500 degrees. It won’t be like pizzeria pizza, but it will be crispy and delicious, albeit a touch thicker and doughier.” Just roll out the dough about twice as thick as usual, then bake in a well-oiled rimmed baking sheet instead of on a pizza peel.
